Autonomous Robots

Build robots that sense their surroundings and act on their own. From sumo rings and line-following tracks to mazes and robotic tennis, these challenges test mechanical design, sensor calibration and reliable decision-making without a driver.

Design it. Test it. Let it compete.

Choose a challenge that fits your platform and experience. Compare the starting dimensions and mass, then test detection, movement and recovery under realistic field conditions. LEGO, mBot and open-platform events have different construction requirements.

Participation implies acceptance of the official rulebook. All teams, mentors, and students are expected to read, understand, and comply with the rules.

LEGO Sumo 1 kg

RB01

Build a compact LEGO sumo robot that finds its opponent and pushes it beyond the ring. After the start delay, sensing and strategy must work without a driver. Balance grip, a strong pushing mechanism and edge detection while using original LEGO components.

LEGO Sumo 3 kg

RB02

Engineer a heavier LEGO sumo robot for a larger ring. Autonomous opponent detection, traction and a stable chassis are central to each duel. Use original LEGO components and design within both the minimum and maximum mass limits.

Mini Sumo

RB04

Fit an autonomous sumo competitor into a small, lightweight chassis. The robot must find its opponent, protect itself at the ring edge and push decisively. This compact format brings together sensor placement, traction and efficient mechanical design.

Mega Sumo

RB07

Build an autonomous sumo robot for the large ring and a higher mass class. Combine opponent detection, controlled pushing power and fast edge response. The compact starting footprint leaves room for inventive mechanisms within the category rules.

LEGO Line Following

RB03

Build an original-LEGO robot that follows a black line across turns and intersections. Tune its sensors and steering to stay on course at speed without remote control. Three timed attempts reward a fast, consistent run after penalties and bonuses.

Starting size · L × W × H
≤ 25 × 25 × 25 cm

Platform
LEGO

The robot must also be tall enough to trigger the timing sensor.

Line Following

RB05

Develop a line-following robot with your own choice of permitted hardware. Read the black line, negotiate turns and pass straight through crossings using onboard sensors. Tune the balance between speed and accuracy across three timed attempts.

Format
3 timed runs

The robot must also be tall enough to trigger the timing sensor.

mBot Line Following

RB08

Use an mBot-based robot to follow a black line through turns and crossings. Calibrate the line sensors and refine the control program for smooth, accurate movement. Three timed runs test how well your robot combines speed with consistency.

The robot must also be tall enough to trigger the timing sensor.

Maze Solving

RB06

Create a robot that finds its way through an 8 × 8 maze while racing an opponent. Sense the walls and choose a route without a driver. Reliable navigation and the required referee-controlled start/stop interface are key to completing the challenge.

LEGO TennisBot

RB09

Program one LEGO robot to collect and transfer balls into the opponent’s court autonomously. Design a reliable ball-handling mechanism and respond to the changing court during the match. Golden balls carry extra points, making collection choices part of the strategy.
